GCRB´s United Nations Project 2014

The Social Studies Department would like to express its joy at the great success that the United Nations Project experienced during the Cultural Week. It was quite obvious that most of our beloved students performed according to expectations and had a fun time impersonating a United Nations delegate.

The Project creates an opportunity for students to showcase their argumentative, oratory and diplomatic skills that are so important for life in general. Problem solving is also crucial in today´s society, and the different committees, assemblies and congresses that were staged are the perfect environment to develop this skill. As teachers, we hope to have established a strong foundation for future simulations of the United Nations here in our very own GCRB Community.

But let’s hear what our students have to say about the Project:

¨I feel that it was a great opportunity for us students to open our horizons to global problems in today´s world. I also think its good because it takes us out of our school environment and it gets us thinking about the big picture.¨ Daniel Salinas 7c (President of the Committee on International Law)

¨I think its important to develop this activities because it helps us to learn more things about interesting topics that we explore in the committees. I also think it’s a good way to participate in Social Studies class.¨ Juan Sebastian Prieto 6a (Japanese Delegation for the Committee on Racism and Discrimination in Sports)

¨At first I was a little nervous about participating in the event, because my delegation was directly involved in pollution, but to make sure I would have a good performance I studied the topic a lot. Finally, I think its very important to pick a good country to represent so that you can participate more during the debates.¨ Karol Moreno  9c (US Delegation for Climate Change)

¨I consider that its easier to be a president in the Project because you don´t feel the pressure to interact with the other delegations in a competitive way. Although being a president is not as hard as being a delegate, you still need to have certain knowledge about the topic and the role you have to play during the meeting.  Anyway, I think it’s cool to be a president.¨ Juan Diego Rodriguez 10a (President of the Security Council on the Russian and Ukrainian Conflict)

¨I think that the Project is pretty cool because we learn a lot about cultures and current world issues. We also learn to solve problems, and this is important in our daily life, since it helps us start solving the issues today.¨ Sammy Pedraza 8c (Israeli Delegation, Committee on Racism)
